Car Guy's Take on Woodward Dream Cruise

Tim Wadsworth

Now was our chance. The Mustang that Greg and I were in was way too low to the ground to see anything. I opened the door and we both jumped out leaving our driver, Cody, behind. He understood why we wanted to get into the bed of Dave's truck a few feet up ahead. Greg and I ran down Woodward Avenue and shortly afterward leaped into the bed of the white Ford. When Greg and I looked we found out that we had made the right decision leaving for higher ground. Looking around had given me the feeling that I had just climbed a huge mountain and I was looking at the beautiful sights below, the sights being the rides surrounding the truck. All I could do was stare in amazement. The lights from the cars sparkling like the sea, the sounds of engines rumbling and the music from the parties on the sides in the background. I could have stood up there the entire night, but I loss balance when the truck started moving. Sitting on the trucks edge I was now able to add detail to images I had seen earlier. Looking at the sidewalk there were just lines of people sitting on chairs or the back of their trucks watching the cars crawl by. There were also massive tents set up by the local restaurants and bars playing music as loud as they could, but they could not overcome the sound of the engines. Every car around us was a piece of art. You could tell how much time, money and love each owner had put into their ride. Even to get the right license plate. For example a Pontiac GTO "The Judge" pulled up beside us and his plate said "ALL RISE." The range of cars was incredible, from '69 fastbacks to a Lotus Elise. If you are fan of any kind of car brand it was there. I only had one problem with the show. I know they are there for our protection but the police should pay more attention to the drunk people coming out of the bars than the people sitting on the side of a truck at a max speed of 5 mph. Actually I have one more complaint, it was too short. We would have gone onto the side of Woodward but there was a curfew for the show so we had to leave. Overall, it was one wild trip. Next year I'm planning to get there earlier in the day so I can find a place to sit on the sidewalk and watch. Just can't wait!

Non Car Guy's Take on the Woodward Dream Cruise

I like cars, but ask me about engine displacement, or the differences between model years of cars and I am clueless. I was riding in a V8 Mustang right behind the white Ford described by Tim, and in front of the orange Mustang driven by Cody. As we were driving past the parking lots full of classic cars I was just soaking it all up. The most amazing thing about Woodward was the mutual love of cars and the friendliness of the people participating. People would drive up to other cars and hold conversations and let people in and out of lanes. The other thing that I loved was seeing cars that you rarely see. Top on my list of cars I love are Shelby Cobras, the two seat roadsters, not the Mustangs. We had a chance to see a bunch of these, though most were probably kit cars. Another highlight of the night was a beautiful newer Ferrari. In the passenger seat was an absolutely beautiful woman, I can say that she was a big highlight to the night. I am not sure if I will be back at Woodward next year. It is a great time, but the best part of it was the time spent with friends, and not the cars. If I can find another group to go down then I will be there for sure.
