Brick Lane, a British film, has a plot that provides a plethora of the common dramatic motifs.  Foremost, the protagonist, an Indian woman who is forced to leave India to marry, struggles with the loss of both her homeland and her family.  Although she constantly contacts her only sister, she finds no peace in her new home after numerous years.  Eventually, she takes up sewing and finds a companion, a young man, to pass the countless, empty hours.  The young man delights her in the way Robert delighted Edna in Chopin’s The Awakening.  As her husband plans a move back to India, which she has desired for years, the relationship with her daughters, husband, and lover suffer dramatic blows.  Finally, she must define love, her identity, and what significance those hold.  Providing a window into international films, Brick Lane portrays deep emotion and struggles foreign to the modern cultures of the Western World.
