"If you're going to Ulm, don't swim in the lake there. You can swim in the Rhine river, though!"

Students preparing for study abroad attended orientation on 6th Monday with Rebecca Campbell from the Office of International Programs. Advice and reminders ranged from critical information about bank accounts and money management ("Exchange dollars for Euros before taking off, and leave time for your bank to get the foreign currency shipped in") to less essential notes about food and drink ("The greasier the food is, the less likely it is to make you sick"). Students were encouraged to be flexible and open-minded about the cultural differences between the United States and their destinations.

A total of 30 students will study abroad in Spring 2010 with destinations in Germany and China, says Campbell. This is less that the program's capacity, she notes, largely because of the slow economy. "There are spots for more students to join the Spring and the Fall programs in the future." What do returning study abroad students say about the experience? "All of the participants I talk to after their return have amazing stories to tell - some of the greatest lessons our students learn abroad are from their experiences outside the classroom."
