What makes a great club? Awesome food and people of course! That's what the Grill Club is all about, eating delicious food and meeting people who know how to have a great time. The Grill Club meets every Wednesday night in the courtyard of Thompson Hall at 11 PM. On Wednesday, February 17th Iwas able to attend the Grill Club's celebration of Polish and German heritages when they were cooking up a storm of traditional foods.
Despite the chilly weather and the snow, the Grill Club set up the fire and grill in the courtyard as if it were any other Wednesday. The theme for this Wednesday was Polish and German food and so to celebrate these cultures there were a variety of sausages and hot dogs lined up for grilling, including: Italian sausages, beer sausages, and good old traditional franks. There were already several students when I arrived at the courtyard. As I walked up to the grill, I could smell delicious food being cooked. Someone nearby was telling everyone, "Grab a sausage and put it on the grill! It's not going to cook itself!" While my food was being seared by the flames of the grill I looked up and around. More and more students had begun showing up and taking up the space around the grill. A Grill Club member came out of the crowd and began commanding the grill, which was suddenly surrounded by a growing crowd of hungry students. Chips, cold drinks, delicious grilled sausages, and laughter were being shared and spread throughout the courtyard. The area around the grill was occupied by students of all status, from freshman to upperclassmen. Since it was Ash Wednesday some students couldn't eat the food, at least until midnight. One of the good things about the Grill Club is that it doesn't begin until 11 pm. Once midnight rolled around students who were partaking in Ash Wednesday and students coming home from work or a full day's study were able to enjoy the food as well. All were standing around and taking a break from the regular stress of homework and schoolwork while meeting new people, having a good time and eating an awesome (did I mention free) meal.
The food was great and the people were even better. The grill club is a great way to meet new people while enjoying some good cooking! The smell of the scrumptious sausages cooking over the warmth of an open grill and the prospect of eating some good and free food has brought the students together where time, work and distance might otherwise keep them apart.
